One of Vietnam’s great kite spots

Kitesurfing

My Hoa Lagoon offers conditions for a wide range of riders, with flatter water inside the reef and more challenging conditions around the reef and surrounding coastline.

Main Kite Season: November to April

This is the main wind season, with dependable North–Northeast trade winds. Conditions can be strong, commonly reaching around 25–35+ knots, so smaller kite sizes are frequently useful.

Summer Season: May to September

Summer generally brings lighter South–Southeast thermal winds. Conditions tend to be less consistent and can be more affected by local weather systems.

Understanding the Lagoon

My Hoa is a shallow tidal lagoon, so water depth changes considerably with the tide.

At very low tide, parts of the lagoon can dry out completely and riders may need to walk approximately 500 metres towards the reef before reaching deeper water.

On most days there is still a good riding window, so checking both the wind and tide before your session is important.

If you are unfamiliar with the lagoon, reef or local conditions, speak with the kite-school team before launching.

Packing for your kite holiday

What to Bring

If you are bringing your own kite equipment, make sure your quiver suits the season.

During the main winter kite season, conditions can be strong, so smaller kite sizes are particularly useful. Summer generally brings lighter winds.

Recommended

  • Kites suitable for the forecast
  • Bar and lines
  • Harness
  • Board
  • Pump
  • Reef booties
  • Rash guard
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Sunglasses with a secure strap

We particularly recommend reef booties, especially when walking through shallow areas of the lagoon at lower tide.

Useful Extras

A light jacket can be useful on windy evenings, and some riders prefer a 3/2 mm wetsuit on cooler or particularly windy days.

Don’t worry if you forget something. Equipment and accessories are available through the Phi Kite School shop, and kite-repair services are also available.
